The portions of the Utah law which are most relevant to home education are included on this web site. It is important to keep in mind that the interpretation of laws is not a simple matter--if it were, attorneys would be unemployed!
Specifically:
The Utah state compulsory attendance law requires that children attend public school or a regularly established private school. Section 53A-11-101.5. In order to home school legally, each year a family must prepare and submit an affidavit to their local school district stating they intend to homeschool for the prescribed number of days and teaching the core subjects required by Utah State Law. 53A-11-102(2)(a). The local school district will issue an exemption certificate. 53A-11-102(3). Home schooling families are required to receive a new exemption each school year.
